Close Call!

hole in one!

After a heartbreaking accident last year when the little guy's hearing aid slipped out of my hand and into the waiting tub (left it to dry out for 2 days and it was fine). I'm super careful and take them off away from the awaiting bath. The other day though it fell out of my hand and slid across the bathroom floor. What are the chances that it would have slipped through the small hole where the pipes are? I wouldn't have thought they were very good. In a panic I got a flashlight and a hammer, with every intention of ripping up the floor to retrieve this little device that makes all the difference. I removed one small board and realizing it slipped way down. I thought it was all over until I realized why I was seeing little bits of light. I have never been so grateful for the horrible drop ceiling we have in the kitchen! I ran down, got a ladder and found it easily. Crisis and panic over! Phew!

Winter really extended itself this year and Spring was rainy which would be fine if it weren't so cold as well. We seem to have left that behind with a nice stretch of super warm weather. It has been a bit volatile at night though with some intense thunder storms and downpours but the garden is happy...

Etsy Upgrade: New Image Quality Improvements - Before & After Avatar

I happen to think the colors on my imac monitor are bright, clear, and colorful. "True to life" so to speak. Recently I viewed a favorite item on another computer and was shocked at the strong blue value on the photo, it was a total turnoff (doesn't help that it was a food item).

In an effort to prevent this Etsy is releasing a new system for processing, resizing, and storing image files. Apparently the new system will:
* Provide sharper, brighter, higher quality results for uploaded photos
* Support a wider range of uploaded file types

Existing banners, avatars, and item photos will not be changed! The new system is now functioning for team avatars and profile avatars.

Here's the Etsy forum thread from admin

You will need to reupload (is that even a word?) your profile avatar to have it in this new system.

Welcome!

I know it's simply been ages since I've been around. I think this is the hardest post after such a long hiatus. So let's just get the ball rolling...

I am currently a work from home addicted to Etsy thrifting vintage selling mom of 2 fabulous kiddos. BOTH of which are in now in school (how crazy is that).

My oldest is a 5 year old sweetie pie with a heart of gold. Time is flying and "the potty" has just now become "the bathroom". Thankfully though when recently given a bowl of cereal for an after dinner snack she declared it was her first midnight snack (it was 7:30).

Here's my sweetie modeling a vintage dress for my shop!

Then there's the little guy, he'll be 3 in 2 weeks! He keeps us all running. He has a moderate to severe hearing loss and wears hearing aids in both ears. He recently started school full time in a special program for children who are deaf & hard of hearing. There's been a few bumps but he's doing great and is starting to speak a lot more.

He is a busy boy! The busier I can keep him the less of the chance he can get in trouble.

Me? I'm subbing at the local school and working my etsy shop. Corrnucopia is doing better than I could have imagined which only makes me want it to do what I can to take it to the next level. I feel like it is possible. There's some things I know I need to do to improve it while there's still lots left to learn.

I want this to be a place where I can share the fun and not so fun parts of being a mom, raising a special needs kid, running an etsy business, sharing fabulous vintage finds, and anything else that comes to mind. So if any of this interests you stay tuned!

Little Guy Just Turned 2

It's been 3 and a half weeks since little guy started wearing his hearing aids and he is really doing great. He is totally comfortable and doesn't make any fuss about them at all. The audiologist did change them with a slightly thicker one though that doesn't sit as comfortably on his ear and flips over more often. He's great about coming over though to get them put back behind his ear.

I do have to say that I expected to hear more speech much sooner. Being patient is so difficult for me. I spoke with the audiologist who did explain that his brain has to figure out how to process these new sounds before he's able to speak them. Makes sense doesn't it? I just had no idea though.

I definitely think he's becoming more responsive to speech. He also just really starting to respond to the signing that he's learning. I love seeing him sign and he's quite pleased with himself as well - the big knowing smile that accompanies his signs is too cute for words.

I did express to our family case coordinator that I felt a little dismayed over the fact that the caring professionals working with little guy had very little experience with children who have hearing loss. I really want to be sure his specific needs (of which I am clueless of) are being met. Our coordinator has been great and hooked us up with a woman who teaches deaf and hard of hearing children. She will begin working with Ronan very soon. She will be teaching him how to listen. I am really excited about this and she's enthusiastic about taking on our little guy.

Now I just need someone to teach me how to be patient. Maybe that's little guy's job. I know he's got a lot to say to me and he has been patiently waiting for me to get the help he needs to do just that.

So ~ whenever you're ready little one, your mama is listening.

Beyond Expectations

Just an update ~ Day 4 here and Little guy's comfort with his hearing aids has really been beyond expectations. Today is the 3rd day that he has worn them the entire day (with the exception of his nap). I'm absolutely amazed. Yesterday after a little bout of wrestling with his sister he came up to me pointing to his ear. I was quick to frown at him & shake my head "no" I was sure he was about to pull them out. I checked to see what was going on and noticed the hearing aid had come up over his ear. He had come to tell me to fix it. This morning when we came downstairs he pointed to his ears. I do believe he was telling me to put them in.

I called the Audiologist to report the good news and see if we could get them adjusted in 2 weeks rather than 3. She was surprised, pleased and agreed to see us in 2 weeks. She didn't however have an apt until 4/16 ~ ugh! Hopefully there will be a cancellation and we can get in sooner.

On the quest to find out as much as I can on how to raise a hearing impaired child, I've come across some great new blogs. I'm interested in the day to day and soaking up what I can. There's so much to be learned and I love reading about this though the life experiences of others.

Sunshine

Big thanks to Jen over on Olive Street Studio for sending some Sunshine my way. What a wonderful bloggity friend. I'm hoping for some great things to come her way and very much appreciate her thoughts.

Today was a sunshiny day. I started off by having little guy try out his hearing aids. I didn't want to fuss him up by putting both in (I'm new at putting them in so it takes some wiggling on my part) so we began with one. This lasted 26 minutes (I'm logging my time). Not too bad. We were out and about in the car so he did not have them on (I can't keep him from touching them while I'm driving) until we got home. I put the other one in by itself and this lasted 53 minutes. A few hours later I took the plunge and got them both in. This lasted....

3 Hours 25 Minutes!!!!

Wow! I am so freaking excited about this. I only took them off because it was bath night and I wasn't going to have him watch the bath fill up with them on. When I called my husband to tell him he sounded almost tearful. We just want this to work out so badly. The volume is set really low and the Audiologist told me she would adjust this in 2-3 weeks. Hopefully it will be more like 2 weeks. The next adjustment won't be full volume either.

They are really hard to see (he does need a haircut though) and the ear molds are clear.

I actually had to go over and touch the sides of his head to be sure they were still there. (and they were!)

Rome and Impatience

So I'm learning that I'm not a very patient person. I'm also learning that I'm going to have to start being more patient. Trying to remind myself "Rome wasn't built in a day".

Finally had the appointment today. In my eagerness to get the appointment I failed to consider the time ~ 1pm, my little guy's nap time. Needless to say he wasn't very cooperative. Apparently this is to be expected, in fact the next 2-3 weeks are just going to be all about getting him used to his hearing aids. As not to overwhelm him they are adjusted on very low.

He's only to wear them if I am right with him and can be certain he won't pull them out. Short amounts of time and as often as possible. It was suggested to try some m&m's for a reward system and I'm okay with that (it worked to potty train my daughter). Other than that, well I'm on my own!

Here's what I was given ~ the hearing aids, a cleaning kit, a drying case, some sort of testing tubes, covers, a cute mouse that has removable hearing aids, and lots of literature.

Here they are ~ the are very light, unobtrusive, and hopefully when we get used to them they will work well.

So today was a total wash. He was cranky and out of sorts from not napping so I wasn't about to wrestle them on him.

Tomorrow. Tomorrow is another day.

Did I mention that I was impatient?

*and an insurance update. Apparently I'm "lucky" that my insurance is covering anything at all. Typically insurance policies don't cover hearing aids (seriously can you believe that?). The amount they do cover isn't very much though. On the agenda for next week - hunting for some sort of loophole we can use to our advantage.

It's a down day.

~ The hearing aids that we were supposed to get tomorrow have been postponed ~ for a WHOLE week.

~When I talk to the insurance company they tell me the hearing aids are covered. When the office calls they are told they aren't.

~The ent Dr. wants a cat scan of little guy's ears which will mean sedation again.

~More unanswered questions than answered.

~The realization that he has yet to hear his toys make noises, the birds, me telling him how much I love him.

I do appreciate the warm support from your comments. They truly are a comfort. I just want to say thanks.

Tomorrow will be better, this I know. But today, not so good.

Life's Unexpected Twists and Turns

My little guy is going to turn 2 next month. He's the sweetest (and wildest) little lovebug. Everywhere we go people always comment on his dreamy blue eyes. It can't be denied they are something ~ and he's lucky he is so cute as he is into everything.

His been slow to pick up speech and been getting speech therapy for 2 months now. The early intervention programs really are great. At their recommendation we've had his hearing assessed. Results of basic testing were not good, we followed up with an Ear, nose, & throat Dr. who then sent us to get an ABR to determine what he is and isn't hearing.

An Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) sounds scarier than it is. The sedation was the scariest part (he is way to active to sit quietly for 2 hours of testing) but it went well. Basically electrodes are placed on his forehead and behind the ears and ear phones play sounds into his ears. They can then see what sounds his brain is responding to.

We had this test done 5 days ago. When the audiologist kept checking the ear phones I pretty much knew it was not good. I held him while he slept through the test and cried. Little guy has moderate to severe hearing loss in both ears. He's going to need hearing aids. Definitely a shock. Aside from the lack of speech he is so outgoing, curious, and very interactive (aka into everything) so the results were unexpected.

His 2nd birthday is coming up in the middle of April. On the way home I decided my goal would be to get him hearing aids in time to hear us sing "Happy Birthday" to him. In the car I called the hearing center where he had his initial evaluation done. Somehow I managed to get an apt for 2 days later. He's already been fitted for his hearing aids and our next apt is at the end of the week when his hearing aids should be in.

I've been working on putting this into perspective. In the grand scheme of things it's really a drop in the bucket. Knowing how smart, curious, and active my little guy is I'm confident he'll be fine. At this point I can't wait to see him fly as he is finally able figure out what we've been saying to him and he learns to speak. I'm taking things step by step and right now I am so looking forward to this.

***and a little update since I'm a really do like statistics! My owls lasted about 30 minutes before they sold and were then removed from front page. During that time my shop received 16 new hearts. The owls received 28 hearts and according to Google Analytics during the 8:00 hour my shop was visited 257 times. Wow, it's amazing what exposure will do huh? I think being on prime time during Super Bowl was definitely an advantage.

Easy Wheat Germ Casserole Bread Recipe

I picked up some turkey cutlets and thought I'd make a really easy turkey crock pot soup with them. I made a simple soup adding carrots, celery, turnips, onion, and broth. I thought it would be so tasty to have some fresh herbs in there as well and I picked up some to throw in. The only problem was when I saw the bits of herbs floating around I knew I was going to have some trouble getting my 4 year old to eat it.

Then I remembered Julia's lovely soup recipe and thought I can fix this right up!

I don't have an immersion blender (sounds like such a fun tool!) but I do have a blender. So I scooped and pureed. After it was all blended I added some milk and cheddar cheese. This was my first puree soup and it was definitely an experiment (my favorite kind of cooking) and it actually turned very well. I'm looking forward to trying this out again.

To accompany the soup I made a very easy and delicious loaf of bread ~ simple ingredients to mix, no kneading, 45 minutes to rise and 45 minutes to cook. (picture above)

One - Bowl Wheat Germ Casserole Bread

2 3/4 - 3 1/4 cups unsifted flour, divided ( I use a mix of whole wheat and white flour)

1/2 cup wheat germ

2 packets of dry yeast

2 teaspoons salt

2 tablespoons margarine softened (I used butter)

1 1/3 cups very hot tap water

2 tablespoons molasses (room temperature)

In large bowl (I just used my kitchen aid mixer bowl) throughly mix 1 cup flour, wheat germ, undissolved yeast, and salt. Stir in margarine. Gradually add water and molasses. Beat with mixer 2 minutes at medium speed, scraping bowl occasionally. Stir in enough remaining flour to make stiff batter.

Cover, let rise in warm draft-free place until doubled in bulk, about 45 minutes. Stir batter down, beat vigorously 30 seconds. Turn into greased 1 1/2 quart casserole. Bake at 375 for 45 minutes or until done. (you'll get a hollow sound when tapping on the top) Remove from casserole, cool on wire rack.

Enjoy!

I've made it a habit not to use butter on our food (I do cook with it when recipe calls for). My daughter made me laugh though when she asked if we could have the slippery stuff on our bread like we had at the restaurant. Even I can't resist the slippery stuff on homemade warm from the oven bread!

Help I've Lost The Instruction Manual

I knew the crib climbing was going to be challenging but this is ridiculous!

This little fellow just won't stay put. He's already scratched up his face from trying to climb over the baby gate to keep him in his room. I did pick up a toddler bed over the weekend (found it at a yard sale & figured it was meant to be). The first night he got up and cried in the doorway. I had a feeling this might happen so I left a comforter on the floor in front of the door. Sure enough he fell asleep right there. Second night he was so exhausted (not napping now that he can wander about his room) that he did start off in the toddler bed but fell off when he woke up and tried to get out. Third night once again sleeping on the floor. I can't bear to leave him there all night so I bring him up with me when I go to sleep.

So yes I have misplaced the instruction manual and haven't a clue on what to do next ~ any suggestions?

Every Little Bit of Help ~ Helps!

There always seems to be so much to do around the house and just not enough time (or motivation) to get things done. I'm really trying to enlist the help of my 4 year old without breaking any child labor laws.

Seriously I want her to learn to be responsible and I need her help! Lately I've been insisting she put her clothes in the hamper right side out. I really don't like doing laundry and having to turn so many clothes right side out really slows things down. It's usually the nightgowns she forgets and I've been having her turn them herself, a bit tricky for a 4 year old I know.

She has surprised me though and has taught herself a new trick ~ how to wiggle out of her clothes when getting undressed and keep them from turning inside out! What a great surprise. I love how she taught herself this as she realized turning your clothes right side out isn't much fun.

Now if I could just get her to realize she should clean up her toys when she's done playing with the them instead of moving on to something else.

I'd love to hear from you ~ how do you have your little ones help you out?

I frantically asked around at school this morning if anyone had one of those crib tent/top/cover/cages that I could borrow for a few months. (because then he will be able to handle a toddler bed and not get into everything in his room)

I think I scored one but probably won't see it until Monday. Until then I just can't keep this guy put.

I've a feeling it's going to be a looooooooooooong weekend.

We're teaming up with Etsy for a Special Delivery!

My daughter and I are sending in some homemade cards to be delivered to NYC seniors on Valentine's Day. Over 18,000 people are served by Citymeals-on-Wheels ~ That's a lot of lonely seniors. Etsy is helping to send them some love on Valentine's Day by collecting cards to be delivered with their Valentine's Day meals.

While the little guy is napping we love to get crafty ~ anything involving paper, glue, & scissors is pretty much guaranteed to result in a good time. After reading "Special Delivery: S hare Your Love 2010" on Etsy's Storque I knew I wanted us to get involved with this project.

I also loved being able to use this opportunity to teach my 4 year old about caring and helping others. Let's face it the budget is tight but we do have plenty of paper and glue around. If this is a way we can make a difference, albeit a small one, well that's a step. I explained to her we were making these cards for older people like her Great Nana who don't have a lot of people who come to spend time with them and give them love.

We made these two days ago. This morning when I asked her why we made the special Valentines cards she told me they were for the people we don't know because we want them to have love. Lesson learned.

A Lovely Project and A Princess or (ahem) Two!

So I've pulled together some lovely vintage goodies... A beautiful Laura Ashley floral called "Stropshire Posys" according to the selvage from MCMLXXXIII, some ric rac, and a length of red satin ribbon (was still in the package originally 29¢)

I'm quite pleased with the results which I will post pictures of tomorrow!

Almost as sweet as my...

princess???

I'd love to blame it on my daughter but truth be told my mom and I were responsible. I mean my daughter did want to play dress up & I certainly didn't want the little guy to feel left out!

Doesn't he have the best sense of humor? I've honestly been saying this about this kid for like forever. Seriously he is so stinking funny. Even when he's bad he's just got a twinkle in his eye. (it's a good twinkle not a deviant, psychopath one ~ honest!)

Anyway this boy is something else. He is a rough and tumble, pushes the limits, tests the water, 100% all boy. ~ and I had no idea what "all boy" meant until he came along. But this boy at 21 months hasn't found it all that important to speak. I mean why should he, we do just about everything for him. He's happy, not frustrated in the least. His latest trick, mostly done when he is being "redirected" is to look at you and mouth words (with no sound). Ordinarily he makes lots of sounds (just not words) so this behavior is well, really funny but a bit odd. I've tried to video tape it but as soon as I take my camera out he just smiles & babbles.

So with no real mama or dada or even yelling "no" to the dog for trying to swipe his Cheerios, we've finally decided to go ahead and start speech therapy. He starts on Monday and I'm really excited. Hopefully it will help. (I figure it can't hurt) I really want to hear what this kid has to say! I'd love to hear from you especially if you've had experience with a late talker!

Inspiration

I've been busy (though sometimes I'm not so sure with what) and haven't sewn for ages. This is mostly because I don't actually have a sewing room. I've always carried down my needed supplies from my "sewing nook" and have used the dining room table. This wasn't a problem until my little guy came of the age where he is absolutely into everything. Let's face it, I don't have the space in my gated off kitchen to keep my sewing supplies and by the time I put the kids to be the last thing I feel like doing is carrying my machine down and then back up again.

Though I haven't created anything new, I've still maintained my handmade shop. I renew every now and again and have had the nice surprise of selling items. This week I sold a beloved piece ~ my Kaleidoscope Quilt. The buyer asked to have a hanging sleeve put on so that she could display it. (I feel so honored!) I have to say that the making of a simple hanging sleeve inspired me to make an effort to start creating again. What a fantastic feeling!

Tonight I carried down a bunch of goodies and got to work. I've started simple and small and hope that I can continue. It feels so good to get the creative juices flowing and make something lovely!

Sure we are up to our eyeballs in toys here, but it would be so nice to be able to print these off and have a little something special to do while brother is napping on a cold winter's afternoon. I think my daughter would absolutely love playing with these.

Treasures to Keep

An old stationary box filled with a rainbow of vintage ribbons

Since I started selling vintage most of the treasures I've come across I have put up for sale. I do have some of my items displayed in my home to enjoy until someone decides to buy them. There are a few though that I have kept and thought it would be fun to share them.

This tablecloth is a vibrant yellow with strawberries, apples, and pears (along with a few bees) that dance along the border. It does have a few holes but plenty of usable material. ~ I'm seeing some lovely aprons here!

Many of these keepers are items that I don't think I could get that much for so I might as well hold onto. These that I am sharing today are just waiting to be made into something wonderful.

about a dozen 7" vintage doilies ~ like "new"!

about 80 (seriously!) 5" doilies, sticker reads "Guaranteed China Make All Hand Made" in perfect condition!

About a dozen of these 3" square curiosities. Doily with a linen backing and slit in the middle. Any ideas what they may have been used for?

Someday I will be able to start sewing again. In the meantime I love having these bits around, waiting for me to bring them to life.

Until then they sit looking lovely.

Chocolotta Cake ~ Happy Birthday Mom!

My folks have finally moved up here and now live close to us. It's wonderful to have them nearby and the kids get to spend lots more time with them. My Mom's birthday was January 12th and I haven't spend it with her in a long time. This year I was able to cook her a special dinner and of course a birthday cake. She is a chocolate lover so I decided to make her a chocolate cake from scratch. It sounds pretty lame but I had never attempted to make one before! I picked this recipe from my favorite cookbook ~ Perennials

Here's a delicious recipe for Chocolotta Cake ~

2 cups sugar

1 cup butter

4 eggs

1 cup chocolate syrup (I used dark chocolate syrup as Mom loves dark chocolate best!)

2 1/4 cups flour (unsifted measure)

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup buttermilk

1/4 teaspoon baking soda

7 (1.45 ounce) Hershey chocolate bars or 1 (8 ounce) Hershey chocolate bar

Cream butter and sugar at medium speed of electric mixer. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Blend in syrup. Sift together flour and salt. Combine buttermilk and soda. Reduce speed to low. Add dry ingredients to chocolate mixture alternately with buttermilk. Melt chocolate bars in double boiler over hot water. Blend into batter. Pour batter into greased and floured 10-inch tube pan or Bundt pan. Bake at 350 F for 1 hour 15 minutes or until cake tests done. Cool in pan 10 minutes. Turn onto rack or plate.

Breaking apart the chocolate bars was a perfect job for little hands.

I thought frosting would be way too much for this cake.

A sprinkling of powdered sugar and a side of ice cream worked very well.

Tuesday Night Crock Pot Special

I took out some cubed beef/stew meat to defrost last night. I knew that I would make something in the crock pot today but really wasn't in the mood for beef stew. Having no idea what to make, I googled "cubed beef slow cooker recipes", the first result was a winner!

Slow Cooker Beef Stroganoff (click on title for original recipe at allrecipes.com)

1 pound cubed beef stew meat

1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed golden mushroom soup (I used what I had ~ a can of regular condensed mushroom soup)

1/2 cup chopped onion

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1/4 cup water (yup that's it)

4 ounces cream cheese

Directions

1. Combine all ingredients in a slow cooker.

2. Cook on low setting for 8 hours, or on high setting for about 5 hours. Stir in cream cheese just before serving.

I've actually never made Beef Stroganoff before but I definitely will be making this again. It came out very tasty even though I didn't have the golden mushroom soup. It was a bit on the salty side but I rarely add salt so that could be me. If you're salt sensitive I'd go for the low sodium mushroom soup.

Here's the kid's dinners, wouldn't want to mix the meat with the noodles! At first my daughter was not impressed (as in I'm not eating that). When "you've never tried it so how do you know" wasn't working I decided to tell her it was saucy chicken. Then she loved it. I don't make anything called saucy chicken. Go figure.

Here's the little guy. He usually decides it's time to eat when we are finishing, hence no other dishes on the table. Notice the kitchen is gated off. I think he will be invited in when he turns 12. Maybe.

Please forgive me ~ Today was my daughter's first ice skating lesson ~

and I'm still grinning from ear to ear!

There were definitely more downs than ups...

But after sitting a bit and taking it all in (smiling all the way)

she'd get right back up and try again.

Once she got a little help, she was content to move around doing her own thing.

After an hour she was not ready to leave.

It was enormously rewarding to watch her out there.

She truly makes my heart sing.

Lemongrass & Chocolate

I just wanted to show off my latest addition to my Fiestaware collection. (thanks mom!) Lemongrass is the latest color and Chocolate was introduced last year. Don't they look gorgeous together?

These beauties join forest green, tangerine, peacock, plum, scarlet, sunflower, shamrock, and cobalt. I love my rainbow collection of Fiestaware!

Curious Find ~ Virginia Housewife Cook Book

My vintage shop on Etsy has continued to grow and blossom. Each item I've added to my shop has given me opportunity to learn something new. I found this recent addition interesting in so many ways.

This book The Virginia Housewife or Methodical Cook was written by Mary Randolph. This addition is an undated copy published by Hurst & Co. I did quite a bit of research on this piece and would date it circa 1880.

Originally published in 1824, this cookbook has been called the "most influential American cookbook of the 19th century" and "the first truly American cookbook". It contains early evidence of the influence of African cuisine in Southern cooking, though most of the recipes are derived from European traditions.

The author Mary Randolph was the Godmother to Mrs. Robert. E. Lee. Born to an elite family and trained in "proper household management practices", she married David Randolph, an outspoken Federalist. When her husband was removed from his position as United States Marshall by his cousin, President Thomas Jefferson, Mary Randolph opened up a boarding house in order to retain her standard of living. Later in her life she decided to write a cookbook. She died in 1828 and was the first person to be buried in the Arlington National Cemetery.

This book contains cooking instructions for everything from hearty soups to lamb and pork dishes, along with fish, poultry, sauces, vegetables, puddings, cakes, preserves and more.

In addition to traditional Southern fare as okra soup, curry of catfish, barbecued shoat (a fat young hog), field peas, beaten biscuits and sweet potato buns, there are also recipes for dishes, condiments and beverages rarely seen on today's dinner table: sweetbread and oyster pie, grilled calf's head, shoulder of mutton with celery sauce, fried calf's feet, pheasant “a-la-daub,” tansy pudding, gooseberry fool (cold stewed gooseberries with custard and whipped cream), pickled nasturtiums, walnut catsup, vinegar of the four thieves, ginger wine and may others.

This comprehensive cook's reference also provides an introduction to the food and customs of the antebellum South, as well as instructions for making soap, starch and cologne water, cleaning silver, drying herbs and much other useful advice.

Chocolate Covered Cake Balls And Other Fine Treats

We made these decadent treats for the holidays. They were way too wonderful not to share. Whip up a batch before the new year hits and you have resolutions to stick to!

Chocolate Cake Balls

(original recipe)

Ingredients

1 box of your favorite cake mix (we used golden vanilla)

1 can of your favorite icing flavor (we used caramel)

1 bag or bar of your favorite baking chocolate (we used a bag of white chocolate morsels and a bag of chocolate morsels)

Preparation

Mix and bake cake according to directions.

Let the cake cool and crumble into a big bowl.

Add container of frosting and mix well.

Roll into half-inch balls and chill in refrigerator for about an hour.

Melt down chocolate and dip each ball into the chocolate and then re-chill until chocolate is set.

~ My Cake Crumbler ~

I found it easier to use my Kitchen Aid to mix the cake and frosting together.

This mixture was way too sticky for me to roll into balls.

It really needs to be chilled and then rolled. I stopped rolling several times to re chill.

(*and worked on the following chocolate covered pretzel recipe at this time)

Place the rolled up cake balls on wax paper.

When melting the chocolate be sure not to overheat or get water into the chocolate.

I rolled the balls around the melted chocolate then spooned them out & back onto the waxed paper.

I found sprinkled coconut flakes did a nice job of hiding the less than perfect places.

It also gave my daughter a very important job.

These really were scrumptious and I would definitely make them again!

While I waited for my cake/frosting mixture to chill we made these incredibly easy ...

Chocolate Covered Pretzels

and with the many new Hershey Kiss flavors out we made several different kinds (have you tasted the candy cane kisses, wow!). So simple and little ones can really help out.

Ingredients

Bag of pretzels ~ the recipe I found called for circle pretzels but I picked up a bag of these window panes and it worked just fine.

Bag of Hershey Kisses ~ we used dark chocolate kisses, cherry, and hugs. The cherry ones were delicious but a bit messy as the melted cherry filling doesn't quite harden (don't let this deter you if you like the cherry kisses!)

M&M's ~ you won't need a whole bag (oh what to do with the leftovers)

Directions

Remove foil from the Kisses. (perfect kid job but keep your eye on the kid or they will eat your chocolate)

Place the pretzels on a cookie tray (lined with wax paper for easy clean up).
Place one Kiss on top of each pretzel.

Heat in 200F oven for about 5 minutes or until chocolate has softened (the hugs/white chocolate tend to melt faster).

Remove from oven, place an M&M on top and lightly press down.

Cool in refrigerator for about 10 minutes or until set.

Store in an airtight container or eat them all right away!

and it was a Merry Christmas!

The Perfect Gift

My little girl just turned 4.

She's a funny creature and seems to love the simplest of things.

I had really wanted to get her something special for her birthday. A trip to the toy store turned out to be a disaster. We offered up dolls, games, and the like but nothing seemed to grab her eye. Then she found a ball. Once she got a hold of it there was no letting go. I tried to take it away from her in order to get her to focus on finding a birthday gift. The result was tears. I did realize how ridiculous the situation was, so we paid the $1.65 for the ball and left.

I decided to look for something special that was not a toy ~ and found the perfect gift. Ever since she read "The Kissing Hand" by Audrey Penn she loves to give the ASL sign for "I love you". It's become the thing we do at bedtime when I'm leaving her room and a way to say goodbye once she is in her classroom at school.

I searched Etsy for something with this sign & found the perfect item by Silver Shed Studio. Casey was wonderful to work with and quickly sent out this beautiful necklace.

As you can see by the picture my daughter really loves it.

I know it's been a Really looooong time. But Summer is over and it's time. I've missed this place and am really looking forward to getting back into it.

Hope your summer was a good one. We're making a nice transition into Fall. There has been a definite change in weather, routine, & activities - I've even had to pop the heat on for a bit to take the chill off.

This past weekend was the big Fall kickoff event ~ The Adirondack Balloon Festival ~

Absolutely wonderful. We met up with our friends for a picnic dinner and marvelled at the beautiful sites. Here are just a few for you to enjoy!

Oh Drats ... BATS!

Well it's summer (though it doesn't feel like it here) and with summer comes the critters.

Let me add right now, I KNOW how good they are, eating mosquitos by the thousands per hour (or something like that). I KNOW they are facing some disease that is wiping them out at an alarming rate (not a disease they will pass on to me mom).

We have a lovely little pond very nearby and with that of course mosquitos. We also have a colony (as in very many) living behind the chimney.

Behind the chimney is really okay with me. I don't mind having bats in my belfry ~ honest! It's just that every summer one or two makes its way into our house, and that's just creepy!

I went up to get a sweatshirt the other night and saw this bat flying about. We were not able to find him that night but he was located and promptly removed the next day ~ phew!

Funny thing is he looked tremendous flying around but actually no bigger than 3" long lying in the driveway (recovering from a trip out the window in a butterfly net).

Oh So Sweet...

Heaven, I'm in heaven...

Feast your eyes on the Catch of the Day!

I found myself at an estate sale today. Lots of knick knacks and the biggest collection of tupperware I have ever seen in my life. No joke ~ many cabinets chock full, the woman must have been selling it. Also Avon bottles, never seeing them before and not knowing anything about them, I passed them up. Funny thing is I saw them at another sale today as well.

There are so many things that are collectible, I happen to be drawn to what I love ~ fabrics and sewing notions. You can just imagine how I felt when I happened to find this little treasure box!

Vintage rick rack as well as lots of old bias tape & seam binding! I googled Betsy Ross Rick Rack and found that it was made in the 1940's-50's. Don't bother running over to my vintage shop to look for it, some treasures are meant to be kept. They are sitting in a Shwayder Brothers Samsonite which I was excited to find and will be selling!

Family Week & Craft Fair

This past week has been a busy one. My folks came up (and with that comes the pre visit cleaning frenzy) and brought with them a truckload of lumber which would soon become kiddie heaven.

So we've had a big back yard project going on. Unfortunately the weather was noncooperative, very rainy. But after much head scratching and bug swatting we now have a super sweet playset for the kids to enjoy.

Aaack! all the pics of the kids going down the slide together are on mom's camera! I'd wake the kids and take them out for a photo but ~ you just don't wake sleeping kids!

I also went to Plattsburgh for their crafts fair. It was also a garage sale and car show. Not very many sales but you know what ~ it was fun!

There is something very exciting to me about getting up early, loading my car up with all my goodies, and setting up a booth.

No matter what, it's a great opportunity to see people and talk to them about your work, their work (because you will meet other quilters), and get out there. And compliments, lots of compliments!

Of course my folks were up & watching the kiddos for me. They came up to the show to visit me (a bit of a hike actually) and lend moral support ~ as well as to offer a bathroom break. Aren't they incredible?

I only heard about the show from my blogger/etsy buddy Julia over at Adirondack Mama's Gifts. It was great to see her and her sister Laura there and chat if only for a short while.

New Shop!

I decided to take the plunge and open up a Vintage Shop. I'm quite proud of the title ~ Corr Nucopia. I've been busy filling it with some super finds and am looking forward to adding new things. I'd love it if you stopped by to visit, let me know what you think.

At the moment I have MANY unopened (yup, still sealed!) Vintage crewel embroidery and needle point kits. My favorites of this bunch include an Embroidery Purse and a Walt Disney Mary Poppins doll kit.

Quilt Show!

A local guild puts on a wonderful quilt show every two years. The venue is a sports dome, this place is perfect for a quilt show. The lighting is wonderful and it is spacious enough to really enjoy these beautiful quilts.

Today I fed the kids a hearty breakfast and off we went. Little guy soon feel asleep in the stroller and my daughter was really good about not touching & sticking close by.

I'll be sharing some of these beauties over a few posts, enjoy!

Recipe For Friendship by Mary Engelbreit

I love this fabric line by Mary Engelbreit. The name of this line came to mind today ~ hmmm... let's see, put two fellow blogger and Etsians together in a fabric store, if that's not a recipe for friendship I don't know what is!!

I had my husband and kids in the car while I dashed into Joann's for 2 specific things. I'll be REALLY quick (ha! you know how that goes). After I made it to the cutting table I had a feeling about the person that walked by me. Could it be? Could it really be Julia?

It was ~ I met Julia from Adirondack Mama's Gifts! How wonderful is that. We've been following each other's blogs and I was so lucky to be the winner of her giveaway just last month. I do believe we will be getting together as fellow vendors at an upcoming craft show.

What fun to meet you Julia! The first of many I hope.

Needle Book Notions

It's been a while since I've written about what I have been making so I thought I'd let you know what's new.

I've been stitching up these needle books. They are so sweet and fun to create. They are ideal for anyone who sews or crafts and has an assortment of needles on hand. They would be perfect for traveling or as a crafty teacher appreciation gift. A gift certificate to a craft store or local coffee shop could also be included in the pocket inside!

I have upcycled some denim for some and made up some crazy quilt panels for the others. It's a lot of fun finding ribbons and buttons to add the finishing touches. The all have 4 pages of felt for needles and pockets in the inside front and back for storing small scissors and little notions.

The ones pictured on top aren't in my Etsy store (yet) but I do have a bunch already listed. See something you like, just let me know and I'd be glad to list it special for you!

What better way to keep your needles together than with one of these little sweeties!

Desperate Times Call For Desperate Measures!

Seriously folks things were BAD, really really bad. So bad I can't even show you the photos. I've been sewing so much and not really putting things back where they belong and well, let's just say it got very out of hand.

I did actually try on several occasions to make things better. Each time I'd go through my materials I'd just wind up finding something I wanted to make (much more fun than organizing). The Big Clean was just not happening.

My desperate measure was to hand my machine over for a long overdue servicing. Without my machine to sew, I'd have no choice but to get things in order! Here are the results:

Welcome to My Crafty Nook!

I'll still be sewing on the dining room table but at least this work space under the stairs is usable again!

Eventually I would like to put a table here that I can sew on,

I will be on the lookout for one this yard sale season!

I'd then move some of these materials onto shelves that I will put up on the walls.

I love these baskets (all 8 for $1) I found at a golf course yard sale.

They are plastic coated wire and were used to hold golf balls.

More supplies here and only 1 bin of scraps,

(I did separate quite a bit according to color & size, this is the leftovers)

I do have a couple more bins of assorted materials hiding out in my son's room.

Okay so now where is MY MACHINE! It's been a week and a half. He says to call tomorrow, it will probably be ready (probably??). Fingers crossed, I am SEW ready!

Earth Day Mosaic

Earth Day World Mosaic ~ Can You Find Erin?

(the top mosaic actually uses the images several times).

Erin's picture is the 5th row from the bottom and... oh never mind!

One thing you should know about me is that I absolutely LOVE jigsaw puzzles. I don't mean to brag but I am very good at them. So good in fact that the only puzzles that I really enjoy the challenge of are the mosaic type of puzzles. Somehow just before Earth Day I found out about the Earth Mosaic 2009 project through twitter. Since I love mosaic pictures I knew I had to take part. All you had to do was upload a photo taken on Earth Day.

I sent in a photo of my daughter blowing bubbles on the back porch, her smile was perfect and captured the essence of the day. To me this photo represents Earth Day perfectly ~ a child (our future) blowing bubbles, enjoying the beginning of a beautiful season, her little white legs exposed to the fresh air and sunshine for the first time in a long while.

I am looking forward to next year's mosaic. Until then remember everyday is Earth Day ~ do your part so that future generations of bubble blowing children can enjoy the world around them.

It's no secret that I love a good giveaway. The only thing I love better is a GREAT giveaway ~ of which I was fortunate to win (again). New Shoes

I remember reading about this in a magazine ages ago and I thought I'd share this as it seems to be working.

We (my 3 1/2 year old daughter & I) were actually having arguments over whether her last pair of shoes were on the correct feet or not ~

Me: Honey your need to switch your shoes, they are on the wrong feet.

E: No they're not.

Me: um, yes they are...

E: No this is the right way...

Not fun. I just bought her a new pair of summer shoes and thought to try this. Four letter names are just right but you could use initials if your kid has a long name.

So far so good. I'll keep you informed about the next disagreement, I've a feeling this is just the beginning!

~8 Things I'm Looking Forward To ~

1. Putting in my garden. I'm going to make it bigger this year. I love being able to pick herbs & veggies while cooking dinner.
2. Summer, sunshine & the fun that goes along with it!
3. Teaching my kids about the environment & how precious our world is.

4. Having both kids sleep through the entire night & therefore me too!

5. Having my folks move closer so we can spend more time together.

6. Hiking the High Peaks with my children.

~8 Things I Did Yesterday ~

(okay this was actually Sunday but trust me it was way more interesting then yesterday)

1. Made peanut butter and chocolate chip waffles for breakfast.
2. Took Pictures of a new runner/pot holder set for my Etsy shop.
3. Took out the storm windows and put the screens in the doors.
4. Took advantage of the sunshine and hung the laundry out on the line.
5. Decided after lunch to take the kids on a hike/walk to a nearby forest/park that is wheelchair accessible (which means stroller accessible as well).
6. Stopped for ice cream after our hike. My daughter can now finish a small cup on her own (now I don't have to finish it for her).
7. Did the happy sales dance ~ the items I listed in the morning sold!
8. Taught my daughter about spring peepers which we can hear in the evenings from our backdoor.

~8 Things I Wish I Could Do ~

1. Be better at organizing, my time & my "things".

2. Play the guitar.

3. Travel ~ there are so many places I'd like to visit & see.

4. Crochet or knit, my fingers always get all fumbled up!

5. Fluently speak another language.

6. Have a full time sewing business.

7. Declutter.

8. Have my own horse again (and a few for the kids) and be able to ride, ride, ride!

What Little Girls Are Made Of ~ Quilt

Here's my latest quilt. It's funny how things come to be. I had actually planned on making a baby boy quilt for my etsy shop. I purchased material specifically for this project (no silly not this material) but couldn't decide exactly what I wanted to do so I switched to plan B ~ do something entirely different!

I gathered together some material on hand, cut it into various sized strips and

sewed them together.

Then I decided to add some flowers...and then a butterfly, thought some ric rac

would add a nice touch and...

Sewed, stitched, & quilted ....

and Viola! I've named it "What Little Girls Are Made Of" and it's available here!

A Beautiful Day

Tree Bumps & Moss ~ I lichen!

It looks like the weather has finally taken a summery turn. It went from cool to hot and while I know it will cool down again we did get a chance to go out and enjoy this weekend.

A great place on even a hot day is Pack Demonstration forest very close by. The walk/hike is about a mile along wheelchair accessible paths which means the trail is stroller friendly. Even though it was hot out we were in the shade of an old growth hemlock and white pine forest.

About half way through the mile long trail is the Grandmother Tree, a huge eastern white pine. This tree is listed in the New York state historic tree register and is about 175 feet tall and at least 315 years old.

The story behind the tree is that it belonged to the Woodward family. John Woodward planned to cut the tree down and sell the wood so he could buy his wife a set of dishes for their anniversary. His wife, Margaret, was so upset by his plan that she said she would rather do without new dishes than lose the tree. (Yea Margaret!) Family tradition protected the tree until 1927, then the property became part of the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

There was quite a bit of water on the sides of the paths today, perfect for kerplunking some pebbles!

Um... not quite sure what he's thinking (he did have fun though)!

There are a couple of large uprooted trees along the way, so interesting to look at.

Despite her efforts to push the fallen tree off the path,

we did wind up having to lift the stroller over the tree!

Looking forward to summer and more outdoor fun along with the opportunity

to share nature in all her glory with my children.

seller may opt to give a clue, so be sure to read the shop intro!

Once you have located all the pictures, unscramble the
matching letters to form a quilt related word/phrase.

Send your answer in a convo to QuiltsyTeam.
(You will need to sign in to Etsy). Please include the words "May Daze"
in the subject line.

For each correct answer, you will get an entry to win one of six prize packages.
The number of prizes in your package is determined by the length of the word.
So for example, if you unscrambled the word "lotion", and your name
is drawn from the correct entries, you would win six prizes!

We encourage you to buy from participating shops, but there
is no purchase necessary to enter or win.

I just completed this upcycled~repurposed denim tote bag. The floral fabric is vintage material, classic '70s colors. The bag is reversible and has 2 pockets, one on the inside and one on the out.

Welcome!

This is the quilt that I consider my most special. It is actually the very first quilt that I made. When I first moved up to the Adirondacks about 6 years ago, I decided that it was time to learn how to quilt. I had always been fascinated by quilts and living in a more rural area inspired me. I asked my mom for a sewing machine for Christmas and of course she came through.

I immediately started sewing (I hadn't touched a machine since Home Ec in junior high (and that was way long ago).

I tried out a few things but had it in my mind to make a real quilt. A lovely, scrappy, colorful, beauty.

Without a fabric stash how is one to make a scrappy quilt? My solution was bidding on 4" squares on ebay of course! I bid and bid and sewed and sewed!

I used 2 contrasting 4" squares to make 2 of the diamond in a square blocks. After I made up many I decided I wanted some organization in the layout. I arranged them by diamond colors and sewed them into 9 patches.

I was substitute teaching at the time and after I finished the top I showed it to a teacher who I knew quilted for some advice (like what do I do next!). She was a bit surprised when I told her this was my first quilt. She was also taken back by the weight. Apparently there is an easier, more efficient way to make these blocks and the way I made them uses a lot more thread!

She sent me to a proper quilt shop to pick out the backing material and then I had to decide how to finish it. I could have gotten someone to long arm quilt it for me but I wanted complete ownership over its making. Unsure of my experience with quilting the top I decided to tie it. I did sew the binding on and hand finished that.

This quilt measures 68 x 82. The inside is warm & natural cotton batting. It is exactly what I love about quilts ~ Color, simple shapes, a feast for the eyes, and warmth!

My New Banner

So you might have noticed the new banner with my blog title. Pretty snazzy don't you think? It was a little treat for myself. I want to do some advertising with Project Wonderful and tried to create an ad on my own. I was disappointed with my results. I found Erin from Swieky Siggies through a fellow Quiltsy team member who had just gotten an ad, banner, & avatar from her. I was just going to get the ad but then I saw some of her designs and thought why not! Here is my Project Wonderful ad that Erin also created:

It's exactly what I wanted. Erin was really terrific. She was so helpful and made me exactly what I was looking for with both the banner and the ad. If you are looking for some graphic work I would definitely recommend her.

Finally... Signs of Spring

Spring definitely has taken its sweet time to arrive in the north country. The transition this year however seems a bit gentler and sweeter than most years. The air is still cool and its been breezy but the sun has been shining strong and bright, nearly all the snowy patches are gone (there are a few left in the shady corners of the yard but they aren't bothering anyone). The grass actually has a greenish hue to it.

I've found a few signs of life in my garden...

My First Treasury

I had my poster sketch ready and on the advice of a Quiltsy team member I had already typed my title and copied it.

I felt my palms sweating up a bit as the number of lists dropped.

My mantra: Don't refresh, Don't refresh.

Then it hit 222. I moved my mouse around frantically looking for the box to paste my title in. What? Where is it? What have I done??? Reading closer ~ the number drops Below 222 ahhh..

Well I did it! My first treasury. Mostly from Quiltsy team members who are really just a great bunch of folks from all over that like to quilt and do it very well. (go search etsy ~ tags, titles, descriptions "Quiltsy Team" and you'll see what I mean!)

Confessions Of A Modern Day Quilter

I just love my digital camera. Remember the days of worrying about having enough film or even wondering if you got that precious shot and having to wait to develop to find out? ~ So over!

I confess I have even used my digital camera to sort of cheat while quilting! After I made up the blocks for my string quilt I laid them out and rearranged until they were just where I wanted them to be (a different arrangement would make it look completely different).

Traditionally the next step for me would be to put a little piece of masking tape to each block and mark it according to row and block order (ie. A1 to denote first row, first block). You then take the blocks to the sewing machine and sew them up, hoping all the while you are holding them in the right direction!

This time I took a photo of the blocks in their desired layout. I then moved my machine to the kitchen counter so I could see my blocks that were laid out on the floor. (don't worry I cleaned it first!) I then sewed the rows together. There aren't many blocks in a row so it wasn't too taxing of a job to do while standing and I do take frequent breaks to chase the baby!

After I had my rows sewn together I moved my machine back to my sewing area (aka dining room table) and used the photo I had taken to put the rows together in the right order.

Viola! The wonders of modern technology!

Today I finished and listed my string quilt. It was so much fun to make. I named it Crazy Kaleidoscope Quilt. It is now listed in my etsy shop. It is also featured in this lovely treasury thanks to a fellow Quiltsy member Kimbuktu! So glad to have the snow melted and the sun shining. I can now use the barn as a back drop to take photos.

In other news my cat quilt has been sold. I am happy to say those kitties have gone to a wonderful home, their new owner is very happy to have them.

Freecycle ~ use it and pass it around!

I like to think of myself as "earth friendly". When possible I do what I can to lessen my impact on our environment. There are so many ways to do this, start with use less, then reuse what you have, and finally repurpose by finding a new use for what you no longer need.

A great way to get rid of unwanted items when you no longer want them without throwing them away is finding others that can use them. Freecycle is a yahoo group where people post items they want to giveaway or are looking for.

I've a tendency to hang onto things I no longer am using. Yesterday I found 2 wonderful people to take some things that I no longer am using. One fellow freecycler was looking for containers to put her seedlings that had outgrown their pods into. She picked up my 20 large yogurt containers (see I knew they were "too good" to throw away) which she said will be perfect. Another freecycler came and picked up 3 pregnancy books & old issues of Parenting magazine for someone who is expecting.

I've been MIA on the blog scene as of late. It's been a case of so many projects, so little time. I've been sewing a lot and the kids are better which means we can do more things as well. The warm(er) weather has given us a chance to get out and enjoy the sunshine. I am so looking forward to getting that garden going but first will have to tackle racking up the leaves in the half of the yard that missed out in the fall!

Yesterday was spent playing outside and retaking lots of photos of my etsy listings. I am also taking a trip next week to see my parents on Long Island. I am trying to complete the quilting on a string quilt that I am working on so that I can bring it with me and hand finish the binding in the evenings while watching TV with the folks.

So there I was last night sewing along. I took a break to check out my progress and this is what I found! Yes, I've sewed for what feels like miles before realizing I'm running on an empty bobbin but this was a first!! Happily it was relatively easy to repair.
